#Status of English in India:-
Languages are important in the life of any nation. The members of a social group need language to communicate with each other and for all social purposes, for public administration, for commerce and industry, for education and so on.
Ours is a country with Multilingual, Multicultural, pluralistic milieu. An individual can function best through the language which he acquires natively, i.e., the mother tongue.
The social aspirations can best be fulfilled when they are allowed to function through the mother tongue. Therefore it is natural to think of mother tongue for the purpose of education. But the necessity to have a common language for interaction has lead to the learning of English.,
Hindi is the official language of the Union Government of India. However, even after 70 years of Indian Independence from Britain, English is still retained with a status of the "subsidiary" official language.Only a few hundred thousand Indians, or less than 0.1% of the total population, have English as their first language.
According to the 2001 Census, 12.6% of Indians know English. An analysis of the 2001 Census of India concluded that approximately 86 million Indians reported English as their second language, and another 39 million reported it as their third language.
According to the 2005 India Human Development Survey, of the 41,554 surveyed, households reported that 72% of men (29,918) did not speak any English, 28% (11,635) spoke at least some English, and 5% (2,077, roughly 17.9% of those who spoke at least some English) spoke fluent English. Among women, the corresponding percentages were 83% (34,489) speaking no English, 17% (7,064) speaking at least some English, and 3% (1,246, roughly 17.6% of those who spoke at least some English) speaking English fluently.
#Role of English in India:-
India was under the colonial rule for nearly two hundred years. And the Britishers repeatedly showed us how we were just a bunch of Barbarians and they were the "benevolent souls" who were trying to make us more civilized. In the attempt the English language was glorified. First the elites started learning and then slowly it spread. Everyone must have come across this saying, "Angrez chale gaye, angrezi chodd ke gaye", roughly translating to, "The English have left, leaving behind the English language".
In India, the English used is not based on a vernacular; it is not the common speech of people here, unlike that of the speakers of American or Australian English. The language is learnt in the classroom through prescribed textbooks. Irrespective of the regional and social variations of English which its speakers who carne to India professed, the variety which was spoken and taught in the schools and colleges. Written English cannot be said to be the language used while speaking English; ·the speakers of English, moreover, will have an Indian language as their first language. This has, however, not been a barrier to the expression of everyday experiences in the language though the process of evolution of English in India is still not over.

* Since English is spoken in so many different countries there are thousands of schools around the world that offer programmes in English. If you speak English, there're lots of opportunities for you to find an appropriate school and course to suit your academic needs.
* By learning English, you will also learn about other cultures. Few experiences will make you grow as a person more than learning the values, habits and way of life in a culture that is different from yours.
#Conclusion:-
However, English Language has been wisely given up as the medium of teaching at the secondary stage. But at the higher levels i.e. in the university level, English cannot be replaced by any Indian language.
English is now not the monopoly of English people and it can be studied for our own advantage. So it is wise to keep it as a second important language for the students of India and regional languages should be developed. But English ought to be taught from the primary level so that the pupils may be equipped with the power of communication at the international level.
